A lot of post about people getting a larger tank in the future for their overstocked tanks. A 2" cichlid turns into a 12" cichlid quick. Learn from these people they are trying to help. Nothing better than seeing a cichlid that's not stressed and has room to swim.

I made the same mistake when I got my first tank. The Lfs sold me all these fish for a 55g. I should of researched first. After joining this site I learned how over stocked I was and got rid of the fish.

But at least you found proper homes ...for example there's this guy in our local fish hobbyist fb page that asked me if he should get a tsn for his 72 bow........I clearly advised him against it and told him the size and care for these fish .......not even a week later he buys a 5 inch tsn for the 72 bow.....and then 2 weeks later trades his bow for a 55...so now that poor tsn is in a 55 with no future plans

Ignorance is due to lack of knowledge.
Arrogance is about overbearing pride and self importance

I dont see a problem with growing a fish out in a smaller tank and upgrading as the fish grows. The problem is when that upgrade is more "wishful thinking" instead of realistic plans unlike "im upgrading when i get out of school"

Best thing you can do is point them in this direction, best thing I ever did. Only problem is now when I correct people they get all defensive, the classic example, my mum's bf has had fish in the past, and he recently bought my niece a 10gal tank, stating that they could get a few goldfish. When I told my mum that that's a bad idea and gave her a list of tropical fish that'll be great for this tank and she just sayed "but IV got friends that have kept goldfish in same size tanks for years, and there all fine". I told her there's a difference between surviving and thriving, and long story short I'm now in charge of stocking this tank and its maintenance, but I'm not complaining: p

I have been involved with fish for over 30 years. I think the vast majority of people I have came across have good intentions. What they seem to lack is good information and guidance. Then when they find out and see how things are they then come to realize that their good intentions are not attainable or even realistic.
