I just see people wanting to get these big fish when people on here are strongly advising them not to. My 125g is only 18" wide so I stocked it with fish that max around 8"-12''. People are posting about fish that get 1-2' in a 55g. Crazy!
good point. I bought my 125g after I realized I made the mistake of over stocking the 55g. Hated getting rid of my jag and buttikoferiFish don't get big overnight. While I agree that a lot of people buy fish they can't house long term, its mistakes like that that fuel the hobby. Some people get bit by the bug and use that tough lesson to get deeper into the hobby with bigger tanks and better equipment. The others end up selling their monsters, which benefits those of us that don't have room to growout every fish under the sun.
I made that mistake once. About 20 plus yrs ago I bought a red snake head from Woolworth's for 4$, It was unlabeled an roughly 2-3 inches long. In a years time it grew to 14 inches in a 55 gallon. I didn't keep him much longer, gave him to a pet store that had other snakeheads. It wasn't my first fish but i just had no idea what I was dealing with until after my purchase( no computer or smart phone). Call it innocent ignorance but end result was a 14 inch fish suffering in a 12 wide aquarium.
