Buy tank then fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can't believe you all fell for that.

I'd say the average aquarium for average people is a 55g. When I tell people I have a 75g, 100g, and a few 125g, I might as well have said I keep small children hidden in the basement. Some of the looks I get are insane. The comments are even worse. "I bet you're single." Is my favorite to date. I then showed the lady my wife and kids swimming in the pond I had in the garage in the middle of winter! HA!
Fish keeping is kept alive by the people who don't know any better. If their wasn't hundreds of people buying RTCs every month none of us would be able to buy them for $20. If people didn't buy the wrong fish compatibility wise we couldn't get awesome deals on used gear. If people didn't overstock their tanks we would never be able to say "That's over stocked man. You need a XXX to keep those in!" I lost huge respect for this forum and it's members when I got on here looking for advice and the only response I could get out of anyone was that I needed a bigger tank. Go fly a kite... during a hurricane! Answer the questions they're asking and then let them weigh their options. If they don't listen WHO CARES!!! It's not your wasted investment. It's not your community tank that gets eaten. It's not your tank that gets the glass blown out or gear destroyed. I get that you folks are passionate about your fish, but you don't need to be passionate about every person that gets on here and has an Oscar in a 10g. Answer their questions, make it known the recommended size of aquarium the species will one day require. Don't however get on your passion horse and just say that they need a bigger set up. Every single one of you that replies to a thread simply to say "Your tank is too small." are expletives. Yes plural. You all need to sit back and remember that once upon a time you where all stupid too. No one, I do mean no one, is not guilty of an impulse buy or a mislabeled purchase that ended up being outside your means. Yes even you shaking your head with that excrement eating little grin on your face. We are supposed to be a knowledge base for people taking a stab at the hobby, not the "You're doing it all wrong brigade." Just my $1.00 on the subject. Let the flaming commence!
Honestly so true.
Thats why I really don't say much on here everyone just freaks out.

nothing wrong with voicing your opinion, how it is presented yes, folks that take offence to hearing the reality of the situation, and just dead set that what there are doing is right, no matter the years and knowledge of the folks giving the advice does get irritating. Ignorance can be cured with knowledge and is not an insult, no fixing narcissistic stupid.

I'm not saying don't say anything at all ever. It just doesn't need to be said 20 times by 20 different members. A lot of the time I see members hop on a thread just to say "You need a bigger tank." when it has nothing to do with the question asked. If they're asking feeding tips and all you reply is that they have the wrong size tank where does that get anyone? On the defensive. Dude could own Sea World for all you know. Now if they hop on and ask "I have tank X, will xyz fit?" and you know for a fact they won't, not for long, or they'll kill each other, by all means say something. If you read the WHOLE thread and having nothing beneficial to add then don't. I see too many threads where post after post of members saying the same thing only so they can't get their post count up. Remember.....knowledge base, not the you're doing it wrong crew.

nice smokey JFK could not have said it better himself.

I feel like there are a lot of selfish people that clearly want the fish but don't have plans to upgrade but say they will on here just so they don't get flagged
I have had fish in grow out tanks and have yet to skip an upgrade when needed their is nothing wrong with having grow out tanks for large fish if you get the fish at a young age while they are small and you know it's gonna take time for them to become to large for your arlquarium in which you can plan and save for a permanent enclosure while enjoying the fish as they grow simultaneously I see no problem as long as the fish is never deprived of swimming space or clean water I've even seen some Aquariums that I have read are too small for certain species of fish maintained and the fish live just as long and just as healthy of lives I'm not saying it's right or wrong I'm just stating the fact that it happens and the fish never knows the difference this doesn't mean I plan to or will do these things but I would just like to make clear that their nothing wrong with using grow out tanks some fish even prefer the smaller tanks as juveniles and fry these fish will hide and act skittish in larger aquariums

In that respect i totally agree. The best is when someone is preaching about stocking levels while they are committing the same mistakes they are preaching against.....

And the best is when they are talking bout fish they have never kept but make statemts that would make you think they bred the damn species for years.

All these terrible things you guys are talking about makes me glad I started browsing MFK with a week or two of getting my first tank of my own.

Thread took a weird turn...I don't think there's anything wrong with replying with " you need a bigger tank" if it's warranted, I guess it's in the way it's presented.. I'd imagine the guys on this site saying " you need a bigger tank" have lived an learned or seen it vicariously enough to drive them crazy and then comes another person with the 2 oscars in a 20 long questions. With that said... the knowledge of you guys on this site is incredible ,The articles you spend your time posting and the time you spend here helping strangers with their issues for the sake of a hobby apparently goes unappreciated....But not by me, Thanks......

You clearly didn't read my post.....I didn't say there was anything wrong with grow out tanks......I use them myself.......I said people get fish that grow to large sizes without ever upgrading but lie and say they will so they don't get flagged ......read the post correctly before commenting
