that tapajos looks good so does the Xingu I but not worth nearly that much

No, Marcus . One is a atabapo male & I believe the other quite possibly a xingu I. I`ve seen the fish in person last August. But I agree it is a misidentification. HTH.......Keith

P.S. The seller in question is Eddie Martin. He`s a much respected hobbyiest who doesn`t have as much experience with pikes.

It may be an Atabapo pike but the bright white stripe along the dorsal of the Atabapo indicates that it is a female. The roundish, pink belly also say female.

The second fish which is definitley a Xingu pike appears to be female as well despite a lack of white sub-dorsal stripe.

Regardless, they are seperate species and both look to be female.

Aye, Eddie isn't very well versed in pikes...lol. Right now zerelli (member here) is trying to help Eddie out and bring in and sell different fish.

The first pike DOES look like a female Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I'. Kinda odd not having the white band though.

The bottom pike doesn't look to be tapajos I though. There is no humeral blotch, and the caudual occeli isn't ringed in gold. With Keith on this one. Does resemble atabapo. :)

They are both great pikes though! Gorgeous fish. Perhaps he isn't using the term 'pair' the way we think it. They are a 'pair' of pikes, since there are two of them...haha. Now if he said mated pair, or bonded pair, then there might be some problems. Its also possible the pikes are in the same tank together, and aren't fighting, thus making him persume they are a pair. :)

Great eye Mark! I know there are some of us who may have slipped up on this one...haha.

Actually, they were sold to Eddie as a pair. They came from Jeff Rapps.

Is there a pair of each type of pike? Or are the two pikes pictures the 'pair'? If so, Rapps pulled a quick one on you.... :WHOA: I'm suprised actually he would sell those two pictured as a pair, as they are clearly two different species, and both looking to be female.

They are the two fish, Eddie has had them for a long time and when they came in they looked pretty similar so we were not sure if it was dimorphism since as you mention neither of us has much pike experience. The fish were in the same tank but I am not sure they still are. I know Eddie got other pikes since then so it is not out of the question that they are not the original pair. I would not say Jeff was at any fault, just that Eddie got the fish there originally. It could be that Eddie made a mistake somewhere along the line and kept the wrong fish, he has sold some red pikes in the past. I want to make sure that no one thinks I blame Jeff for that mistake, because it could be Eddie's mistake too. I think someone along the line told him they were male and female. If someone has seen Eddie's place you probably can attest that he moves a large volume of fish. I will make sure he knows the ID on the fish, thanks for the lesson!
