Hi I am new here but I need info..lol

I am getting a stingray. Think it is a Hystic (maybe spelled wrong).
We have cichlids and were wondering if they can go in the same tank. The cichlids are jack dempsies (3"), cobult blues (small), blue eyes (one is 4" the othe is 2"), yellow fin tanzian ( 4") and Aurtaus(3"). We also have large oscars (5"). I am sure the oscars are a NO. Just wondering about the Cichlids?

What tankmates can they have? Are Discus safe?

What temp? some say 80 some higher?

What PH again have heard 6.2 - 7.0?

What about decoration..have not heard anything there?

It is going in a sand bottom tank 55 gl. The only thing in there with it is a funny looking coral that looks like a wasp hive and another coral to hide the heater. Was told they can burn themselves on it.

well first things... cichlids are a no, they are to agressive and usually poke at the eyes of rays. temp is 80+ diskes are safe, 55 gallon is WAY to small, most rays get up to 24" disk, you are right they can burn themselves so you need to do that, also true Hystrix rays come from brazil and brazil has stopped the exportation of stingrays about 3 years ago, so wholesalers and veders call them histrix rays to get a higher price tag they are normally humerosa or retric rays and both get close to 24" diamater the retric normally stays smaller but has a huge long tail

Don't get a stingray, 55 gallons is too small for the fish you already have.

Oscars wouldn't even be as much of a problem as the aurutus, those are one of the most aggressive cichlids out there, and they would compete for the bottom of the tank.

Plus 55 gallons is too small for a stingray anyway (if its anything other than a growout).

Get a bigger tank, say around 180 gallons, and then get a stingray.

Your bioload will be much to high with the oscars (although the temperment wouldn't be as much of a problem as they would probably ignore it)

how about catfish or a pike, or dats.

Use the search bar and read some of the sticky's at the top of the stingray forum page.

You need to do a little more research before jumping into rays.

I would highly recommend that you read "Freshwater Stingrays" by Dr. Richard Ross.

Required reading for any future ray keeper. Its also a really cheap book full of useful info!

DO NOT GET A RAY!
come on man.... lets be nice.... they are asking for info so lets give them straight up answers and info on how to keep a ray not just turn them away, we want more responsible ray keepers so lets teach them how to be responsible ray keepers rather then just turning them away right away
