Buying carp

theres no need to be so biased or ignorant. carp are one of the most gracefull and intelligent fish in the world. I could say most people are fat lazy and poo way too much. now as for 50lbs? your thinking grass carp, theyre highly a highly illegal invasive because they mulch the plant life similar to cattle, eating up to 20-30 lbs a day, common carp dont get to be 50lbs on average, 57lbs is the north american record for a common carp just to put in perspective what your asking for. I say catch a small wild one and enjoy watching it grow out. 20lbs is a pretty big carp and I dont even know what kinda pond you would need for that.

michaeljames, I don't think anyone was trying to insult carp... well, maybe that "fat ugly" remark... and there I have to agree with you about most people! :D
i think you're right that even common carp would be large enough to satisfy the OP. koi can grow to 3 feet long and 30 lbs. i'm not sure if catching one and bringing it home is legal, but then again they are an invasive species so it might be legal. i would check with fish & game before going out with a pole.
just keep in mind that these fish live 25-50 years. find a nice one that you won't mind having around for a half century or so. :D
