Carfax only will show reported damages, if the car was fixed shadetree style, then it will still have a clean Carfax. After my girl got in an accident and we repaired her car, it still didn't show the accident on Carfax for a year. I wouldn't trust Carfax, good to have and look at, but not reliable enough. Have a good mechanic pick apart the car, tell him it's for your daughter who turned 16 and you want to make sure it's safe - it can tell them how important his opinion might be.
