buying fish from wanlmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If they consistently have dead and dying fish (as do most walmart stores), then I would think common sense would be enough to answer that question...
I think you are missing the point . So many people make threads complaining about Walmart fish and generalizing that all Walmarts fish are in poor health when infact some Walmarts fish section are not all bad. Everybody says support the Lfs but some of them are as bad or worse than some Walmarts when it comes to upkeep of there tanks Instead of singling out Walmart as a whole we should encourage and educate others to not assume just because a fish was bought from a lfs vs Walmart it is a healthier fish.

[getting up on his soap box]
....... Any store or individual that sells live anything has the responsibility to do what ever it takes to ensure that the livestock that they are selling is healthy...You may quote me on that.
...Any person that knowingly buys from an establishment or another person that will not or does not follow this practice is just as much at fault as the seller...You may quote me on that also...........
...........Why you ask ? Because by knowingly buying unhealthy livestock from such establishments or persons you are promoting said practice ... You may quote me on that as well...
[gets off his soap box]
now having said that every lfs, person or establishment that also happens to sell fish no matter how good or bad a reputation, they have will ALL have a livestock health issue at some point. How the issue is resolved is what sets a quality vendor apart from the others. Always buy Quality and you will never be sorry.

i work at walmart, and as an associate- I wouldn't buy fish from walmart. I know how they come. I know how theyre treated. There are standards throughout every store, the only difference is how good or bad the associate responsible for cleaning the tanks is. MOST are uninformed/apathetic to the cause of caring for the fish. The particular store I work has has HIGHER conditions, and I STILL wouldnt buy from there. I make sure the lady responsible for cleaning the tanks does so often and takes more precautions than would one without me/another fish enthusiast. She knows nothing about fish, and most don't. they clean when an algae infestation occurs and thats it. its a buyer beware situation. buying fish from walmart is buying fish to save and revive them. dont expect much. the associates are informed on how to follow procedure, and procedure has nothing to do with fish health. Just appearance.

the 3 walmarts in Longview, every time i go there the water is green, there are at least 6 dead fish in each tank, the bettas are in brown water that is maybe half an inch from the bottom, its really depressing to see them like that, id never buy a fish from walmart unless i just absolutely thought it would have a chance of making it i bought one of my algae eaters from there, missing his whole tail and he has it back now, but that was the one time i bought a fish from there and i doubt i will again

I think you're missing the point. Yes, there is that minority of stores that actually take care of their fish to some extent, but the problem is, the majority of them don't treat their livestock any differently than they would treat any other item in the store. When an lfs treats their fish like that, they lose livestock, customers, and ultimately, profit which, in most cases, forces them to either change their fish keeping practices, or go out of business. But unlike lfs's, every Walmart store, despite its independent qualities, is run by one company, which is a large corporation that has many different sources of profit, and therefor has no real need, business-wise, to correct the conditions under which the majority of its stores keep their fish; so essentially, by repeatedly buying your fish there, regardless of the quality that individual store may provide, you are just ignorantly supporting their unethical practices elswhere.
