I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I didn't see any old threads. I apologize ahead of time if I missed this somewhere. Anyways... I was wondering how to tell which grocery store bought fish was safe to feed to my guys. I've been feeding them frozen tilapia and just recently tried a bag of frozen "cold water shrimp." Both listed salt as an extra ingredient, and nothing else. I've been keeping large fish for almost a year now, so I'm still new to this. Any and all advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. :)

I got to Chinese wholesale or supermarkets they have vast selection on frozen foods and usually quite cheep to buy ,
I buy raw king tiger prawns/shrimp One bag shell on one bag shell off , bag of muscles and a bag of whitebait , never had any probs

I have heard about the loads of salt that frozen raw shrimp is said to contain and I wonder if a cold water soak prior to using them might draw some of it out...I guess you just have to check and compare the package labels and decide which ones are best to use for your fish.

I usually chop all mine up and put in a bowl of cold water and run tap on it before feeding , it cleans it out a little and defrosts it pretty quickly

I buy frozen tilapia and shrimp in bulk from restaurant depot and have for years. I never had any problems with it. I just thaw it out in hot water

It should draw salt out until the salt level of the water is the same as the shrimp. Even though it should work like that doesn't mean it does.

I ask the locals what brand and what they feed in their tanks. I get tilapia from Walmart. 4lbs for 10.99

When I was keeping loads of monsters I got friendly with a fish cutter at a local market. Id get loads of scraps for next to nothing and it was always fresh and clean. I tried to stay away from frozen store bought although I did use it in a pinch

I personally prefer frozen over live rosy reds or goldfish from LFS, feel at ease about worrying that my fish will contract a bacterial or parasitic disease. I do however use live micro worms that I culture myself:)
