Buying n selling aquariums....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see good deals almost weekly. I bought a brand NEW 240 acrylic (still had paper on it) for $450. The guy was asking $1500, and offered $300. If you check CL several times a day, there are many good deals. I see them when they were only posted for a couple hours and buy them, that is why you don't see them. Bought a 220 glass, cabinet, sump and box-o-stuff for $250, sold the tank for $300 and kept the rest for my new tank. FX5 for $120, another for $125. Just have to be fast and be ready to low ball if you like it. If you only check every few days, I already bought the deal. Please ignore what I said if you live in Kansas City and let me keep all of the bargains.

On the selling side, a few ideas:

1) never wait until the last minute
2) tank always show better while full
3) resist the temptation to piece things out. You won't get higher prices for the rest
4) it is okay to reject lowball offers.

I sold my 18 year old 110 gallon tank and stand with 2 emperors, lights, gravel, a heater for 240...

Not too bad...

I bought 11 40 gal square tanks for $120, sold for $20-25 each off of CL. Patience is the key.

Lets talk about the lowballers....
You can get good deals on CL for sure but what if you are selling that 210 for $210? 1 year old, no scratches...." hey bud, I got $200 bucks and that's it..."
Really? $10? You cant cough up another $10? Geez, I'll help you load it into your mini van!
CL has a rep for flakes too. People interested, show up 3 hrs late and then try and lowball you. Or they don't even show up. The bottom line is, to find a good deal on CL you've got to shop the sight daily, even hourly. To SELL something on CL, you have to be desperate for cash....like you're jonezing for a fix and all you have to sell is your tank! Sellers beware, CL buyers have lofty expectations too.

Either way, buying or selling, both sides need to be realistic.

Very true.. a guy at work loves to do the CL thing for his remote control vehicle hobby.. (engineers man.. kids every one..) he and a guy selling some parts were like $10 apart on the price and he said the guy took his repeated low offers insulting and threw the parts in the trash and kicked him out screaming that he'd rather not sell and throw them away than be screwed on the price. Pretty funny actually. People are weird on this stuff. =)

The people who try to sell their stuff on Craigslist for those prices are morons or crooks, plain and simple. Those in the know need to set them straight. They think because they got ripped off during the initial sale they have a responsibility to rip off others. I've seen some ads on there in upwards of a year and they wont budge on the price. Craigslist should charge them for advertising after this long.

I just repetively flag the rediculous ones, I have got a few deals on there. Got a 90 gallon tank with outa scratch on it, a beautiful hand made oak stand, matching canopy, glass tops, 4' jbj compact flourescent light with built in fans, and all this was free. Thecatch was the guy had a brand new fluval fx5 in the box with a receipt showing the purchase being about two months prior, he just wanted his $250 back out of the filter and everything else came with it. Gave me some story about his lady tossing him out before hecould set up his tank. Point is stick with it, the crap ads will sit for months before they give up or some sap falls for it, but when real deals go up they aint there for long.
