Buying new glass tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh man,. it looks like I may have missed the boat on this 125.
I don't see it available anywhere online and my local store is telling they "don't think" they'll be carrying the Aqueon tanks anymore. All they stock of Top Fin.
Bummer.

I would be checking local Craigslist constantly. I've seen a few of those sets for sale just in my area in the past year. Sometimes the sellers are a little kooky with the pricing, sometimes they're next to nothing.

I have craigslist search favorited for "fish tank", "aquarium", and "glass" and hit them religiously every day just to make sure I'm not missing a deal.

Another option is to check your local fish club. This could be a problem if you arent a member of one. My local fish club has a clubhouse, and they have used tanks that they give to you for next to nothing, sometimes even free. Big tanks too.

Oh man! Oh Man! In typical fashion I let this project snowball on me!

I had planned on making this set up quick, simple, and easy. Just add water, a HOB, fish, and call it good.

BUT NO!!!!

I started thinking about how easy my 300 is to maintain with a sump, temperature controlled water fill system, DC pump, etc, etc, etc. I can do a 100 gallon water change in 16 minutes while watching TV and drinking a beer, and never get my hands wet.

So I'm building this 125 as a mini 300:
* Alter, reinforce, and seal the original particular board stand. Including added cabinet doors.
* Design and build a new 4 foot sump set up as a wet/dry.
* DC return pump.
* Fiji Cube overflow box set up with Bean Animal drains.
* Dual returns.
* Paint the back black.
* Ranco heater control.
* Build a 13" tall riser to get the 125 at the same height as the 300.
* Add a drain to the tank and run it out the wall (that makes a total of FIVE drilled holes in the glass).
* Tap into the existing water fill system.

My wife just rolls her eyes at me!IMG_8305.JPGIMG_8304.JPGIMG_8290.JPGIMG_8299.JPGIMG_8303.JPG

Congrats!

I love the comment about adding a drain through the wall. When you actually start putting holes in the walls of your house but mention only the number of holes drilled in the glass aquarium...you might be an aquarium redneck...:)

HEY! I resemble that remark! LOL

Looks great so far, I’m always a fan of making things easy for maintenance. Please take lots of pictures and keep the thread updated.

Thanks. Will do.
