OK, im finally trading in my HOB Marineland 350 filter for a canister filter. Im tired of the noise and it doesnt seem to work all that well. Ive researched several filters and seems like im going to buy the EHEIM 2217 filter.

I have a 55 gallon planted tank, with 2 small chiclids,1 goldfish, a large shrimp, 2 small corys and a pleco and blood parrot. There just always seems to be **** floating in the water, small particles.

Ive never used a canister filter before, let alone this one, i getting it online at petsmart. It says it comes with all the media, just not sure how it all works, how to clean it or how often to clean. A

Any help would be great, thanks.

eheims have slower flow rates than fluvals, and are more expensive, so mechanical filtration won't be great. in my experience, having something with bigger flow will allow it to suck up bigger particles and other crap in the water, while a weaker flow filter won't be strong enough to suck up the big particles.

Think quality of quantity. the 2217 will be plenty. i have one on my tank and it does wonders.

That's great and everything, but many seem to forget that all those big particles that get trapped in the filter--SIT THERE until you change it.

The Eheim has much better biological filtration which will break down the waste whether its trapped in the filter or still in the tank.

^ THIS.. Quality over quantity. Eheim 2117 or any classic for the matter is a good choice for smaller tanks.

Welcome to MFK ;) having said that I am confused, are you suggesting the the amount of crap (solids) will be disolved in an Eheim classic better than Fluval or Marineland etc because of the size of bacterial colony?

Eheims are notorious for having lousy directions. The new ones however, come with DVD's...

That being said classics and older models dont. They are actually super simple, you just over think it because in your head there must be some sort of magic that makes these filters so much superior to anything else on the market.

It turns out that after all the years of fighting with marineland, your body, mind, and spirit, simply arent ready to accept to simplicity and wonderfulness of eheim. Im still checking mine daily to see if its running. It is. Just that quiet. Have fun, if it was a classic I would have you call me and I would walk you through setup. :D

didn't he say he's getting a 2217? that is a classic . . .

I have 5 eheims, and I think they are great . . . they are probably not the best at keeping water "crispy" clean, but they are efficient, they are silent, and they will typically run forever (give or take) . . .

I was a little intimidate when I first set one up - - I agree, the directions were not good - - but in retrospect, they are actually pretty straigh-forward

I'd say you let us know if you are having problems after you get it, I'm sure someone can talk you thru it . . .

Im wanting a filter that is going to keep my water crystal clear!! I have a 55g that might be slighlty overstocked.
