I want a new tank and was looking around of craig's list and found some pretty nice tanks for very nice prices. My guess is anything that has to do with filters or heaters should be replaced but the tank itself? What do you guys think? Anyone ever gone used before?

thanks for any responses

I just got a complete 90 setup off craigslist for 150. You will find it depends case for case. Mine came with a brand new magnum 350 canister and heaters either work or dont. Sometimes it needs to be replaced, sometimes it needs to be added to, sometimes its fine.

I've never bought a tank over 55 gallons new...unless you count a Rubbermaid tub.

I've bought a 50, 75, 110, 125, 150, and 200 all used. I've even bought a couple used 29g tanks before.

Most of my tanks are used and half of them were free.It seems like someone around here is always putting one out for trash pick up.

I got my 120 gal+ stand for $450 with everything including 5 pretty big piranha. I ended up replacing all the filter pads because the bags were all busted up, one heater because it had the slightest hint of rust, plus I swapped from a single 36 inch light to a dual t5. Minus the light it was all pretty basic maint. stuff. The light was $150 new but man do my plants grow now :D

im actually trading my 40 gal corner tank and $100 for a used 120 gal stand and hood :)
im excited about it.

My 80 gal and 100 gal are used tanks. The 80 gal had a good fulval 405 filter that works great along with a good heater.

My 100 gal came with filters and heater that did not work.

Just make sure it holds water and all seals look good.

I bought 225G, 150G, and a 135G, used and super cheep. The only thing I ever needed to do with the tanks is repair/build a new stand, and replace the silicon in my 150G (glass).

I am in the minority as I only buy brand new.

if the tank is small, which usually means not to expensive, so its not worth it to me to buy used and have to worry about the increased risk of leaks, tank failure etc.

if the tank is large, I want maximum quality with the lowest risk so I want brand new.

there is no in between for me I guess LOL.

yes, even brand new tanks from the LFS can leak, break etc.

but this risk is significantly lower. with a used tank, you really don't know what the tank has been subjected to before you get it. 99% of the time the seller is going to tell you exactly what you want to hear to make a sale..:screwy:

was the tank ever dropped? heck no
was the tank left out to dry in the sun? heck no.

right...

also, if you are particular about your accessories, buying new is the best way. otherwise, you buy used but then spend just as much upgrading the lights/filters/decor etc to stuff you actually like :)
