Buying used tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
youll find most people here buy used. we let other guys buy new, then buy it from them for less than half of what they paid for it

ive only bought one tank new, and that was because i specifically wanted a rimless tank that isnt too easy to find. my 400g acrylic was used. brand new the tank would have cost $4k, just the tank. no thank you!

which brings up a good point:

if you are setting up your 'dream tank' chances are you have something specific in mind that you will not find used.

for example, when I set up my 150g, I wanted black silicone. something that is commonly available now on all kinds of smaller sized tanks. but not the big ones...

sometimes, buying new is the only option.

but rest assured folks, its worth every penny :)

yeah definitely. buying used is a 'take what you can get' game. if youre specific about what you want, then new/custom built is your only option

The seller lying is a good point. I guess I lucked out since when I bought the tank it had been sitting on a wood stand on a wood floor for 3 years. Very unlikely he could of hidden any major leaks. I knew when I bought it I was going to buy a billion plants and replace the rock eventually... that was an extra 100 right off the bat figured in but still cheaper than the tank/stand new.

All my tanks are used with no issues.

My little 5 gallon metalframe I would have never found new :P

All of the tank i own short of one of the 125 gallon tanks i bought off craigslist.
300 : 800 bucks all accessories oak stand
220 : 600 bucks all accessories oak stand
125 : 350 bucks all accessories oak stand
75 : 100 bucks missing top glass oak stand
55 : free no stand
55 : 100 bucks all accessories (sold it again but kept the power heads :)) press board stand
30 : 20 bucks no stand
10 : free no accessories no stand

Only bought the other 125 new because of a christmas special. Came with everything (heaters air pump, blah blah blah) and 2 emporer 400s for 700 coudlnt pass it up.

In other words GO CRAIGSLIST TANKS :D

All I buy is used. it's cheaper. I get the tank and put it outside for a week with water. I usually reseal if the silicone is even near degrading. That's just me though.
