Bye bye fish oil --- UPDATED with modification

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the one i have is adjuable to how much it skimms the rest is pulled from the lower area of the intake, So a weak filter can be adujust up so it skimms more, a strong filter you adjust down to skimm less. I'm pretty sure you can't use it on a FX5 or anything but most any canister should work with it.

so, a 200'ish GPH canister will work? i might buy the Tom's version.

Salt water skimmer don't work on freshwater because the specific gravity is too low to support strong bubbles, most don't work as well on brackish either.

Howdy,

Nice. Would it work for a FX5? or 2262?

Absolutely, you just have to insert a T-piece to reduce the flow. The surface extractor is rated by Eheim for 165 gal/h.

However, I didn't want to mess with dividing up my 2262 outlet tubing, it would limit accessibility. An extra 2213 on my tank does not make a difference, I easily hide the spray bar in my floating plants.

From the looks of your modifications, this would be a very simple DIY for people that have other canister filters with different size intakes, such as the FX5.

Not sure. The beauty with this surface extractor is that it has a weighed valve at the bottom, allowing the filter to draw water from lower regions if the surface skimmer is blocked. My filter would've run dry several times already if it didn't have that.

Why don't you just buy a HOB sw skimmer. Should skim the protiens with no problem in theory.

I have a problem with fish oil, not protein. Two different beasts. Besides, my religion prohibits me from running HOBs. So does my set-up, and my sense of aesthetics ;)
