So i have finally come to the realization that my gt's are producing too much waste and are just to big for my tiny 30 gallon. So i am going to try doing something with some africans.

my first question is how many i know they dont get extrodinarily big and im starting with fish that arent very big 1 inch tops

i figured 4 and a pleco of some sort or a smaller cat would be ok

let me get some input please.

also i am going with a crushed coral base black back

but ive heard that some people put a wood in there tank. redmoor maybe it is i guess this is due to africans enjoying the roots etc.

basically my question is how many

and is redmoor really that great for these cichlids.

In reality, a 4 foot tank is better for Africans if you want any kind of variety, or size. Shell dwellers are about your only option with a 30g. Use crushed aragonite - it buffers a little, but isnt really sharp on the mouth, nor will it destroy the impeller in your filter like sand will.

When you say africans, what Lake do you mean? There are a huge number of species of "africans"

Let us know and we can help

Also, wood tends to lower the ph of the water, so try to avoid it.

Wood will lower it but wont it balance out with the hieghtened ph of the crushed coral or will the wood lower more then the coral will add?

as far as africans at this point i dont want to really get anything extreme or that i will get to interested in because i will be buying a house after the first of the year and will have a larger tank with maybe some arowanas and some nice cats.

however i would prefer not to get shellies as i want something ill be able to see not to mention i have a daughter so she enjoys a bit of color.

Ive never really dealt with african cichlids ever i started out with some gold fish like 8 years ago and got some sa's after that and had sa's ever since. I dont know much in the terms of fish beyond that.

ne information on some maybe 3-4 inch max breed african cichlids with some color would be great for now. ive done research a bit but really havnt found anything.

also i found someone to house my larger gt for me so i wont be loosing her permanently after all :)

i was just thinking maybe 2 zebras and a pleco would be ok?

thats 4 inches roughly a piece for them and maybe 4-6 for a smaller growing pleco wouldnt mind having a albino bristle nose something of that nature?

let me know what you guys think.

also im reading that bristle nose and some other species have a higher tolerance for high ph levels so the crushed coral substrate wouldnt be an issue.

Other than a few shellies you won't get many Africans in a 30 gallon tank.

I'd go for a pair of Brevis and a pair of Juli Transcriptus. But that would be a pretty boring tank IMO.

just read a post that was on another post about a 30 gallon alyssa has.

they said something about rainbows or blue rams?

they seem ok i could get away with 2 of those and something eh?

they were also talking about adding tetras to the mix to give it some life.
