Bye, Bye, Sveni :( :)

Huh, I've never seen HITH that bad. I didn't think it actually went that deep and I thought it progressed slowly. Guess I was wrong.

I know it's not because of poor water quality in my tank because it's always 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and <5 nitrate. I didn't have it long enough for it to be poor diet, either. Besides that, I have other cichlids that have never shown it at all and I feed good food. However, it never ate anything from day one of obtaining it, but it otherwise looked healthy enough for it to make it a while without food.

Hopefully, I will have the time tomorrow to get some close-up pix.

The only other fish that have any damage at all are the tat, which has some of it's tail bitten off (has happened before, cause by the ornate) and the loisellei that my male jag was trying to pair up with, but he is gone. The other tankmates are 4 other bichirs from 8-13 inches, a 10" florida/spotted gar, a 5" frontosa, 2 7" dats, 11" LSN and 10" BGK. I don't think anyone was picking on it. He laid under the same piece of driftwood with everyone else and no one bother him (that I could see).

only fish that could of done it was the loisellie by the way how is it

Could of been from running into or scraping against the driftwood still think its some kind of infection possibly worsend by rubbing or scraping by the fish was it doing that at all ?

That's because, as I mentioned, HITH head simply describes a symptom and not what the actual probelm is. HITH can be cause by multiple things and depending on what is causing it will determine how fast it progresses. You have probably never seen it caused by actual disease before and only seen it fish that are simply stressed.

Again, it was not because of the factors you mention. In this case it was caused by a pathogen. HITH that is caused by stress simply causes the skin to deteriorate over time exposing the sensory pits underneath. Initially Hexamita looks like it is errupting from the skin and they everything starts to errode.

HITH has become such a catch all phrase that in many cases it is used improperly. It's like using the term "rash" to describe everything that causes a rash. A rash from yellow fever vs a rash from poison ivy are two very different things however. HITH is the same way. HITH from a pathogen is very different than HITH from stress.

Thanks for all the info and clearing up my misconceptions. I haven't had a fish with HITH before and I've never seen it in person, either. I was basing everything off of mal info.
