Garlic in long term will kill or prevent from breeding most intestinal worms, adult tapeworms are harder to kill and are long lived. They do not kill fish (or people) directly but can lead to infection at the ulcerated spots left when they feed, and can fill enough of the gut that the fish can't get enough nutrition no matter how much they eat and in general they lead to dietary defficiency problems, if you have a fish with adult tape worms I reccomend using a commercial vermifuge laced food to kill the worms, not just drive them out like garlic sometimes does. I just driven out the worms will die but then the segments seperate and each segment if eaten by a fish can become a new worm. If the worm is an adult one it reproduces by discarding segments which are passed into the tank where other fish eat them so it is best to treat the entire tank as any catfish you have, or other fish that nibble on detritus will probably already contain worms.
