Personally I will pick Nic over JD in the tank that size. If you are able to convince your gf (probably not) not to get a BP, try rainbow cichlid. IMO rainbow, nic, and meeki will make a very good CA community. With this combo I also think that the tetra will have a better chance to survive.

I wish I could find a rainbow around here. I do think that the nic will work better, and it's a pretty unique looking fish. Of course, so is the BP, and we'll see how she feels about getting rid of that one. I'm going to get one of those floating log things to maybe give the tetras a place to escape to.

I'm still waiting on the cycling to show some progress. Perhaps I'll add some more gravel or something.

iagree but im not sure wether we are thinking it is a joke for the same reasons =P (cookie cutter)
nicaraguensis is a beautiful fish, the females are very brightly coloured and the males altho being slightly duller have nive finniage and can even develope a nuchal hump.
they grow to around 10" and have a nice temperement i had a female that lived with pretty much everything =P id choose one over a JD just cause JD's seem too common to me. thats just my opinion=P
either way i think it would work. and if it dosnt would u maybe consider upgrading to a larger tank when the fish need it?

Yeah, I'd eventually like a bigger tank, I just have to take it slowly to avoid death at the hands of a loved one. :) But hopefully it will work, I figure my firemouth, being the biggest at this point, will keep everyone in line but not commit any watery murders for the time being. He's going in last anyway.

Get the Nic. Very pretty fish as it matures. Then when it gets some size on it and the gf is attached, explain that you will have to get rid of the fish for it's own good. If she is attached to it she will want to get a bigger tank. Or just get a bigger tank. Remember, it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Sparkly jewelery helps too.

I thought there was a good shot the nic would work in the tank for life? I wouldn't want to get it knowing I'd need a bigger tank for sure, just because I don't think that's generally a good strategy, because things can happen.
