Anyone know of any CA cichlids that could go in a 20g high for life? dimensions are 24x12x12". I've been looking into rainbows, nanolutus and rainbows, would any of those work? Or perhaps a Sajica or cutteri? Only other fish in the tank will be a trio of black mollies. Any ideas anyone?

I'd do a nice large male Sajica with some dithers and a BNP. You could try to house a pair, but 24" isn't much room for a female to escape. Otherwise, anything that tops out around 5-6" would probably be ok for life, assuming it's the only Cichlid in the tank.

rainbow cichlid and dithers.. anything bigger or more active is asking for an unhealthy fish ,,most rainbows top out at about 4",, so they are a viable candidate as a SINGLE

Okay, thank you both for the advise. I will more than likely go with a rainbow or nanolutus cichlid. As a matter of interest though, why is it deemed acceptable to put an Oscar in a 120g (4x2x2ft) a tank which is 4 times as long and twice as wide as the fish, when it is not okay to put a convict in a tank which proportionally is the same size? This is a genuine question and not me just trying to be cocky btw.

Who said you can't put a single male con in a 20 high?

The hard part, in my opinion, with a tank that size is curbing aggression between the male and female during breeding. When the male wants to breed and the female doesn't there isn't much room for her to get away.

Honestly I'd go with a trio of Apistogramma. Very stunning fish!

+1 also very mellow, they don't relentless torment the females when they aren't ready to spawn, and if you have three (1m2f) you might get a harem going where both females will raise the young. I have a pair of agassizii that are awesome! Also Bolivian rams are neat, mellow, cheaper and are more readily available.
