CA Cichlid for a 20g high

Yeah, I've heard that rainbows and nanos are some of the smallest CAs out there so size wise they would probably be better suited for my tank but I have also heard that they prefer to live in small groups, is this true?

As stated above, anything maxing out at the 5-6" range would be suitable for a 20g. Although a trio of apistogramma sounds interesting, didn't know they could live peaceful like that.
