CA cichlid stocking - 6x2x2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The sev is the one to look out for. It's too old to change its ways, and would more likely be the aggressor. If possible get the new cichlids and dithers first in the new tank. After your tank is cycled, introduce the sev.

Swordtails would work as dithers.

The Sev appears timid - I've introduced ellioti's in the past. After a day or two of chasing and showing dominance, it lost interest and left them alone. But point taken and appreciate there is a risk element in introducing new tankmates.

Unfortunately I can't set up and run the new tank (with new fish) before introducing the sev. I'm taking the filters from the old tank so can't run both simultaneously. Hmmm, maybe I could take 1 of the 2 filters from the old to the new for a limited time (1-2 weeks) and do it that way.

I'd go with a melanurum or potentially some heterospilas if you can find them

I'm growing 5 hets out with my severum now along with 3 hypselecara temporalis growouts (temporary situation). The male severum is about 8 inches while the hets are between 4 and 5. Getting along nicely so far. In the past the severum has been a pain but now in his more adult years he's calmed down some it seems

Swords are appropriate, and fast.
I like the natural color varieties so as not to take bravado from the cichlids, X. mayae below.

I drop gravid females in sumps to give birth, a gravid female below, fry below that.

Sailfin mollies are also good choice , some reaching 7".

Mollies in the video below

Just move everything over since you can't run one tank.... but I would still advise quarantine for the newcomers. You can get a 30-gallon tough storage tote from home depot for $11 to act as quarantine.

I've kept salvini with Vieja without any issues. IME they tend to ignore anything that's not comparable in size. I would expect the sev to get mauled when your vieja reaches a similar size.

hmmm, so maybe the vieja is the long term replacement for the sev then, but I could proceed with the rainbows.

not to keep pushing hets, but hets grow exceedingly slow. I got mine at about .5 inches and i've had them 2 years and they are now approaching 5. They top out though anywhere from 9-12 inches i believe. Their aggression is lowest among the viejas (at least they used to be in the vieja genus)

Sev gonna live for at least another 5 years as long as its stress level is not raised up high due to being picked on.
