CA Dithers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good plan, a pair and live bearing dithers.
Gambusia live bearers are also common here.
Gambusia affinis? We have them as far north as New york.

Below a video I took in a Cenote in the Yucatan with plenty of gambusia, here I believe they are Gambusia nicarauguense (AKA mosquito fish), one thing I like is they are relatively plain, and don't take focus off the cichlids, kind of like moving wall paper.

Why cant those river systems exist here in New England. Also I think I need to get a pleco for some egg control because I am currently not prepared to take care of many fry let alone an ammount over 10. If you have any suggestions for plecos I would love to hear them I'm considering either an ancistrus or hypancistrus.

I did a lot of research on CA plecos looking for one for my own tank, there are two species of ancistrus that are found in panama. One is ancistrus chagresi, and I cannot remember the other. But neither are available in the hobby, so I went with a normal bristlenose.
I wouldn't get one only to eat the eggs, the parents will most likely chase it away from the wggs any time it gets near. The parents will also eat the fry themselves if you just leave them in the tank.

I love swords as dithers. Their size is slightly larger than Gamusia and they can be fast. You can also add current i the tank as they seem to enjoy it.
Knife Livebearers are another option if you can find them.

Hoplo's are a cool little catfish and a group would look excellent.
There is a catfish from panama that gets about a foot in length. Maybe too big?
