CA hybrid fertility list

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe, not a 100% certain tho. She is very nice looking either way tho. I know with FH atleast that, unlike the BP, it's very flip flop on which could be infertile/fertile. So honestly it's like the toss of a coin on whether or not it will be fertile. You could end up really lucky but then again you could end up with an infertile female. So all in all it's a gamble with all chips on the table. It would definitely be worth seeing a hybrid between those 2 tho. Personally I'd like to start a paratilapia polleni/FH cross project but I honestly don't know if it would even be possible to hybridize an African with a FH.
That would be a crazy cross bro. How would you even go about the process? Just stickem together?

I had another idea just as far out..

What about a Pumpkinseed/FH cross?

I'd do the normal process of having them separated by a divider till I can be a 100% certain they wouldn't just kill each other. Lol honestly it would be neat to see a North American cichlid mix with a FH but from my experiences of having bluegill atleast, they tend to be wussies. Might be possible with a smaller SA specie of some kind, something that would stay closer to the size a pumpkin seed would end up at. I know when I get a few orange spotted sunfish I might try tossing a firemouth in with em just to see what I could get.

The elusive spotted sunfish... I've travelled far and wide on the hunt for that fish...

I've caught every variant of bluegill, green sunfish & pumpkinseed. 2 years 300+ outings across 3 states. Never once seen one like that.. starting to think its photoshopped!

Lol the males and females look drastically different color wise. The female are a flat gray color with rusty orange spots while the males get that gorgeous blue/green color with vibrant orange spotting. I catch them very rarely around here but more often then not I find green sunfish, bluegill, shell crackers, pumpkin seed, and black crappie. Btw the photo I posted was from Google images so very possible it was photo shopped to an extent but I do find wild ones with the same bright colors.

If you catch a couple you dont want to keep. Send a few my way.

I caught a red breast and grew it out.. effing amazing. I love large bluegill they have a lot of personality. That got me thru the hard times of not having any cichlids in my area. Have to ship them all in

Will do. They're kinda like the small mouth bass in my area, very hard to find. I catch maybe a spotted once or twice every other year. I have a few areas I find them in but they often get out competed but green sunfish or bullhead, so they've been getting harder to find for the past few years. I'd like to get long ear and dollar sunfish but I can buy them online. We don't get either of those 2 species in South Dakota here.

Yea green sunfish are some ferocious fighters. One of my favorite aquarium fish if you can take them. Between green sunfish and pumpkinseeds tho, I cant call which is more aggressive. They both Smash my line when they see it.

I've caught a few tiger small mouth.. they look dope. Rock Bass to me look like a crappie hybridized with a small mouth.. rock bass are getting hard to find. Those little guys are stupid cute.

Yeah I honestly catch more rock bass then I do with small mouth. Almost as rare as the smallies is the flier sunfish. Very easy to mistake one for a juvinile white crappie. Yeah them greenies are just lil beasts around here. Rare to find any eating sized ones tho, almost always find them around 1-5 inches. Once I get my 80 gallon fixed up again I might start a native tank with some of the smaller sunfish species around here.
