My male went through 6 females since 2007. Everything would be fine and Id come home to dead females every so often. I tried the 2 females thing and it worked for a little while, but the first time I tried, he killed both females. Spent too much $ in shipping trying to get a compatible pair to be honest. If I did it all over again, Id just put a divider up permanently and make it so that only she could get on one side of it. They kill FAST. One time he did it in about 30 minutes when I ran to get something to eat.

Also, the only dumb questions are those not asked!:naughty:

Thanks so much for the patience guys. Maybe festae is not the species for me then. Going through 6 females does not sound attractive at all. That sucks too because I see people like Balton77 with a beautiful pair and wish I could have that for myself. :( Looks like I need to keep researching species from the former Vieja genus. Hopefully they are not as hit and miss..

Urm, so no one is going to mention that festae ARE south american instead of central american? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? :grinno:

Yeah I know. Everyone lumps them in with CA's though because of the agression IMO. Technically I said CA's that are festae compatable not that they are CA. I sure can't mix them with the OH colony in there right now, that's for sure..

Really? I always thought of them as flattened pike cichlids myself.

"flata'cichla" LOL!!

As soon as fallin49er reads this it's all going to go downhill... He and I were picking up a tank about a year ago and he asked me what fish it would take to get me into CA's, I said festae.. fallin49er >> "Ummmm bro you do realize they SA right?...." :duh: Good thing I'm not afraid to embarrass myself on these interwebs..

Hah, yeah, completely forgot that they were SA's.

I was going to suggest a pair of Grammodes or an Ornatum pair, but truth is, they can go through quite a lot of females too.

Heck, most of the brute species will.

If rough housing ain't your thing, i suggest you get a nice all Male display tank going.
Just make sure you get plenty fish, of roughly the same caliber, little to no potential terretorial sites in the tank, and i really doubt you will experience any casualties due to agression.

I do still keep a few spawning pairs in some tanks, but i always fancied the impressive big setup with alot of movement, color, and generally just that i get to experience several different speices of cool fish, instead of being limited to 1-2 pairs pr. tank.

Well, whatever you decide on, my guess is it will be great with your care, and awesome tank!;)

So is the general consensus it's not a good idea to have a pair in a community setting? Justin and I are both getting festae, but I'm putting mine in a 125 for now (not to hijack the thread). Is there any fish that can go in with them with minimal danger, like a big pleco or something?

Wow!! That is a really nice tank. I'm in the process of planning a 300 as well and yours has given me plenty of ideas. I was looking at 3d backgrounds today and yours looks amazing. Great job

I'm a noob as far as sa cichlids goes too so I'm just gonna sit on the sidelines and learn from this one. Your tank even got my wife excited when I told her ours would be the same size. Outstanding tank!!

Yeah, plecos very rarely get taken out. They simply aren't targets for the cichlids agression, generally speaking. And should they somehow become a target, they have pretty thick "skin" , and can take a punch or 27.
