Cainster filter problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
take out some of the new media ...make sure to use all (or most)of the hob media....this should help

If the intake hose has loops and/or hangs below the entry into the filter than it is your problem. The filter pumps water out which creates a vacuum and siphons water in, the siphon needs gravity on its side not working against it.

As long as the intake in tank water level higher than where water go into filter, won't break the siphon. sorry, was finding out how to word it, that's what I came up with, sorry if confusing lol

This might be it. I removed the old media and put it in a HOB filter and loosened up the media in the other treys. If the pipe is not the issue maybe I will just remove a whole trey.

Now a little side rant. I got a drilled 125 that came with a sump. I didn't seal the pipes good enough, then the sump had a leak and I decided just to use a canister filter. I tried to fill the bulk heads with a PVC cap and the gasket started to leak. I have been trying to set this tank up since September. Every time I think I got it another problem occurs. I wish I documented my whole journey with this tank, the floods and my girlfriend. At least I will enjoy it once it is complete. Here is a video of the filter. Canister filter is filled and so are the tubes.

This is a strange filter. First the Canister has to be completely empty in order for it to prime correctly. Second The rubber gaskets between trays has to be seated good and tight ,you should almost feel the tray snap in place(I add some Vasaline very lightly to help make sure it seals good). Make sure tank is good and full with both intake and output well under water(I keep a extra bucket ready to pour in as this takes up some water) at no point do you want to let ither get above or even close to water leval. The instructions are crazy I dont remember but it says something stupid like press twice (it take way more then that just do it gently the output will start to bubble like crazy then it will realy start sucking water (make sure you are still not plugged in to electricty). When its full the bubbling will stop, at this point plug it in, it will spit air on and off for a good hour at times it may look like you have no output!!!. After about one hour gently tip the filter back and forth, than left and right it will start spitting air again with each tilt (which does not need to be tipped to far, a couple of inches maybe). This will bleed remaining air. At this point you are good to go. One tip, if you hear it getting a little bit load then you need to tip filter to bleed air. In the design the head will hold some air and not bleed it all by itself.

You need to almost go to school to learn how to restart this filter!!!! Once you get that one minor issue down it's a filtering beast.

Yep watched the vid at no point can the output be out of water...I think this is how it gets it suchion. Try above it should fix you up. Sorry for being long winded:-).

^ +1 Sound like a touchy filter. Never owned this specific one, but priming method sounds similar to my crappy marineland canister (hate that filter, canister pretty much has to empty to get trays to sit tight). All my other canisters r a breeze to get going.
