so i was browsing the laws against rays in cali and i discovered it onl;y cover the genuys potomoygon(spelling). then i was like huh, thats odd, i knows theres other genuses of freshwater stingrays......................

and scince i love african fish i came up with this:

Dasyatis garouaensis: African Freshwater Stingray!

theoreticaly legal in cali :) and not to mention perfect for my african niger river biotope
(under construction)

now to get wes or toyin to get me 1 :)

then theres the asian river stingrays, not potomorygons either..... huh, seems cali should cover their bases better yah?

good luck getting Dasyatis garouaensis. it is endangered due to fisheries and degradation. im not sure if it is protected (dont think so) but i imagine it would be very hard to get one, even if you still wanted to get a WC

i dont think its endangered, its listed as venurable, but not protected. i know it would be a serious pian to try and get 1 but ya never know, people have rarer stuff, isnt that what were all about :)

Only FW stingrays in the family Potamotrygonidae are illegal in CA w/out a permit. Thus, dasyatid rays are legal in CA. A few years ago, Wes (fugupuff) brought in some Himantura oxyrhyncha (marble whipray) from Asia and sold them through his SoCal store.

lol
VULNERABLE (VU)
A taxon is Vulnerable when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the criteria A to E for Vulnerable (see Section V), and it is therefore considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

i know that section V covers a lot and only has to meet one of the many things in it, but...

not sure about asian rays

I wouldn't characterize this as a "loophole" though. Dasyatid rays are simply not listed, while potramotrygonid rays are listed. One family is regulated, the other is not.

which to me is totoaly lame, just goes to show that theres is simply nothing backing the ban of rays in cali, unless they think that only potomorygons could survive, which i very well doubt, its just lame thats all. i wonder why more sellers dont bring in more non-potomorygon rays?

Unless the way that they ban "rays" in cali is by banning the ones that are most common in trade, therefore only those who actually know what they are doing keep rays in cali. Just a therory.

Man, that law sucks for you Cali people.
