Hello,

I need your guys’ help;I am going to send a letter to the California state fish and game to help makefreshwater stingrays legal for aquarium uses. I need your help. I was thinkingsince Cali can get some cold harsh winters here, so there would be no way theycould survive that. Then why would people spend 300 dollars on a fish that theyare going to throw in a river or lake. And if we have them in our aquariumsthen we can learn about them for educational purposes. Also, even if they dobecome legal but you must have a permit to have one, charge for the permit. Say100,000 people buy permits for the stingrays at $10 a piece then that would be aneasy 1,000,000 dollars they can make from just letting us have them in ourponds or aquariums. So please send mesome ideas on why freshwater rays should be legal in Cali. Thanks

Sorry man it wont happen! I live in Utah and they wont let us have piranhas. The winters are bad here most all water freezes over or is near freezing temps. If you want rays that bad you should move to AZ. Not bashing just saying CA fish and game will not change laws ...

+1, not gonna happen

Once something is made illegal, it's hard if not impossible to get it legal again. Which is why it's important to fight against making them illegal in the first place...

Yeah well unless all the ray-wanting keepers in Cali form a lobby and put millions of dollars clandestinely into the right pockets, nothing will change. Sorry, but that's how legislation works. Until there's a large asian arowana lobby (probably never) in the US, they'll remain illegal for the same reasons.

Gubment don't do no work fo free!

The huge issue is that stingrays pose a threat to the swimmers if they were released in the waters and they can survive in California during summer with no problems...tho if the tilapia and other tropicals are capable to surviving in California then the stingrays can. California is worst state that have strict laws for fishkeeping around in United States so I doubt they will change the laws.

Yeah I dont think it'll work, good luck though. Cali has best prices usually for tanks and equipment cheap but the worst laws on which species you can keep. I doubt ill ever move out the state though.

yep, I have a short list of states I told my husband we could never move to.. because we'de have to get rid of 3/4 of our fish or more. And the first whisper I hear of such laws in our state I'de be petitioning the crap outta it.

I know how you feel. I'm in Cali also and really want rays. I've seen them for sale though if you go to fish stores in china town even though they're definitely not legal.

The laws here are pretty stupid like we can't have piranhas but we can have blue ringed octopus! Like really?! And like all primates are illegal EXCEPT chimpanzees! Those things can totally f*** us up yet we can have them without a permit, but we can't have a tiny little marmoset? I love surfing and snowboarding WAY too much though to move out just so I can keep other animals.

You can try for a permit for educational purposes as long as you perform some type of education at least once a year. One of my neighbors was granted a permit to keep cobras so once a year, he'll bring then to a reptile meet and that satisfies animal control for educational purposes.

I could never understand why they banned glofish in California.
