Did you rule out any stray electricity leaking into tank , i had that happen to me once when i was breeding angels. Somehow it affected only the fry , parents were ok. Culprit was a canister filter , after a few months of losing fry i swapped out to air driven filter and everything went back to normal.

Well thanks for that info. No I didn't rule that out but right now I have a few 5 month old hybrids and they are doing fine within the same setup. But I haven't had any spawns within the tank since the marbles. Another thing they did was spaz out and go in circles real fast. They were never even moved with a syphon to be having all them issues. Its really wierd. But I washed my hands with the parents and I'll move forward with Casper(which is also deformed... Imagine that). Casper doesn't have a full dorsal fin. I will posts some updates of him on his thread soon.

This happens in a lot of spawns when I was breeding angels. It always went back to a high bacteria load in the tank and that always went back to creeping nitrate levels. So, I'd say it's a water quality issue, though even in excellent quality water you can get higher bacterial loads and in that case a UV sterilizer works wonders. The other possibilities are parasites probably protozoans that are not serious enough to kill all of them or the parents but enough to kill the weakest of the spawn or, do a close-up inspection for hydra.

Thanks Krusty for that info. Well with them just being marble convicts and not really something that will bring in some $, I let my friend have them. I feel that I've had to many spawns with many other types of fish to waste time with them trying to figure out "their" issue. If the pair spawns for my friend and they make it I would consider the water quality issue but I treat all my tanks the same so I don't "think" so. Also angels are a lot more delicate than convicts... You and I both know how hardy convicts are. But I could be wrong and I will keep you all informed if they make some more pearl whites like Casper.

with my breeding of calicos i also noticed the same dorsal mutation. where either the very beginning of it was missing or it had 1 dorsal spike a gap and then the rest of the dorsal

Yeah I pretty much accepted that the pair I had produced deformed fins... Its good to hear it wasn't just my pair. Since marble to marble created them issues I tried a reg male with the recessive marble gene paired to a marble female... It gave me regulars, marbles, and whites but I fed them to my texas fry. I might take the time to spawn and raise some fry again in the future but I have to much going on right now to focus on them.

damn im surprised this thread is still going strong. ive been looking for some calicoes to breed but due to the fact i might have to give up the hobby im sceptical on weather i want to get more. i seen one of the sole survivers from my spawn down at my lfs. the guy i gave him to grew him out then decided he didnt want him no more. i tired to buy him back but someone got him before i could.

It just takes so long for the fry to grow to know if there showing decent markings that ud want to breed that individual. I'm currently breeding a recessive carrier to a calico. And also 2 calicos w light striping n random markings 2gether. Just time consuming getting a surviving fry worth breeding
