I'm looking for info on a calico crab (Hepatus Epheliticus). My girl friend brought one home and I dont know much about these. How big do they get, what do they eat, reef safe etc?

It doesn't really look reef safe...

Yeah I found out they really arnt. Hes kind of small but has an anemone stuck to him and is very active. Im just going to keep an eye on him. Im more worried he will mess with my shrimp then my fish.

He's about 2.5" across his shell, He has some beefy little claws though. Thats a good Idea with the sump, I have a pair of bangai cardinals I've been trying to spawn without too much luck there now but they can be moved too.

How big is he? You could put him in your sump, refugium or in a little guppy breeder box.

man i love those crabs... unfortunately ive only seen them on the discovery channel.... if you put him in water shallow enough to have his mouth poking out they shoot a constant stream of water... if this is in fact the same species i saw, they look the same.... is the common name "box crab"? :flamed:

They are a type of box crab. I kind of wish she wouldnt have bought him. He hasnt caused any trouble yet but from what I have read they eat anything they can, including fish. I watched him picking up hermit crabs this morning and throwing them over his back
