I'm up north in Sonoma County. Most of the stores here order fish from San Francisco or SoCal...and not very many stock "rare" species. We get a lot of oscars, dempseys and non aggressive types up this way. Very rare to even see a silver aro in any stores around here. Most fish I get are special order. I hate having fish shipped ,and having a store special order them means I don't pay shipping ,but I get a shipped fish that hasn't been acclimated yet in a store even.

I'm leaning towards an ATF or payara. I'm not so into the single fish in a tank thing anymore though. If I could get some bichirs to go with one of those I'd be happy:D

My cousin Graduated from Sonoma, nice place, ya not much of a fish selection but you aren't super far from Frisco which usually has a pretty good selection of fish. I think most of the LFS get their fish and Oddballs from there also. As others have mentioned if your looking for a single fish in a tank that is interactive I've heard very good things of the Fahaka Puffer, not too expensive and look pretty cool. I had two small ones before my growout tank crashed and lost all but one or two fish in the tank. Good luck.

I am pretty sure that the reason so many fish are illegal here is because if they were released into the wild they would survive and possibly harm/change the ecosystem. More so in northern california they are worried about aggressive fish like bowfins and gars damaging the already struggling salmon population.

Quick, tell me where you live! Haha, kidding.

Fishwrestler, I see your point. But it's not like CA is the only place with lakes and fish. I don't know, something is just.........fishy.
