California pike eradication begins.

I bet it doesn't work. Even if they are successful in killing all the pike, I bet someone re-introduces them. You know that some of the people in the area would rather fish for pike than trout.

I know the pike is a non native species, but it seems so drastic to kill all the fish and start over.

I agree.
So, in order to save the trout, they kill everything in the lake INCLUDING the trout?

From the article
If left alone, biologists say, the toothy northern pike could take over Lake Davis and possibly escape to the Sacramento River system, devouring trout and salmon all the way to San Francisco Bay.

Sounds like a necessary evil IMO.

I guess you're right. I just don't think everyone in the area will look at the big picture, and realize the damage that could be done by re-introducing the pike.

I personally would prefer to fish for pike than the same old trout. Killing off the whole lake seems such a waste-especially since they failed last time. As far as the salmon fishery, WE are a far greater threat than the pike.

pikes coexist with salmons and trouts east of the rockies, why can't that happen here? pikes can provide great fishing as well, people travel to canada just to fish for pikes! most trouts are not native to california as well. with all that money and effort spent, they should fund the trout hatcheris more and stock more fish! RETARDS.

This is true but the situation in California is not the same. The trout aren't the same, the habitat and conditions not the same. Pike in Lake Davis are having a negative affect on trout populations and even the economy. People go to the lake to catch trout, not pike. Besides, the big threat here is that the pike may move out of the lake and spread. You cannot introduce an apex predator without having something go wrong. What they are doing is unfortanatly the best solution.

There have been plenty of trout being caught before and after the pike were established in the lake. The main thing is, they do not want the trout getting out of the lake into the river system. With that being said, I dont thing they will ever eradicate the pike unless the lake is drained, and even then someone can/will stock it again with pike.
