Apologies for the caps guys.

Im not happy to announce this at all. Im pushing my luck, and I am not happy and feel like I already know the answer (Please do not rage, I want to do the right thing)

My 60 gallon will soon be cycled and will stock for one year (2 baby Oscars, 1.5 inches now and one Flagtail).

Recently, my friend had a huge argument with his family (I won’t get into his personal details). And within that argument, he cracked his tank which housed ONE 1.5 inch jaguar cichlid (he is now holding it in a bucket, with a heater and air stone).

The fish will not last there for long, and he is flying tonight for other family matters he has to attend too. He is quite upset on what he is gonna do with his fish (No LFS is taking it, with such short notice, not even for free…they do not want to house a jaguar due to their GENTLE fish setups)

I don’t want this fish to die. I love jags, they are beautiful and I want to save it.

Can I take the fish and try to raise it with my two baby Oscars… and will it be fine for 1 year until I move out. I have dividers just incase they fight?

Please advise (we already tried LFS, and online resources…time line is to short, its either in a bucket or in my tank for a year)…

And yes my 60 gallon has high filtration and I do TWO water changes a week…. (20% and 50%)

You would more than likely be fine just keep an eye on things and if it gets out of hand throw the divider in. You should definately look into a bigger tank as they get larger if you plan on keeping them all.

I have kept young Oscars and jags that size together in that size tank, temporally. Better than the bucket. You will need to be alert for aggression though.

I'd try what's the worse that can happen? No worse than if your friend leaves and can't find a home for it.

Should be fine for a temporary home but come a year down the line the jag may be too big and aggressive

I will be actually moving this July... and I have the money saved for a BIG tank. Just waiting on my mum to come back so we can move. I said ONE year max, just as an insurance policy, god forbid my monetary position changes or something.

And yes..one year max. I would not even keep two oscars in that tank for longer than that.

I'm sure they'll be fine since they are all still small. Just keep a divider handy just in case and have a couple of hiding spots. I've seen much larger fish in much more cramped conditions that seemed amazingly well.

I did it for way more than a year, but in a 125. I raised 1 jag and 2 oscars together. They did great. Just make sure you keep everyone well fed, do regular water changes, and provide hiding places.
Everyone is going to tell you that you're way over stocked, and you totally are. You know that. However, living that way beats the crap out of living in a bucket. I would do it.

divide the tank, territorially speaking. if you've got multiple places so they can't always see each other, it'll be easier than a wide open tank. 5 or 6 irregularly shaped areas made with rocks, wood, or well anchored fake plants that go most of the way to the waterline will go a long way towards keeping aggression in check.
