I purchased a small one the other day and so far it is eating small guppies and rosies.I'm wondering if anyone has had any success getting them off of live feeders at a small size.

Working on it, but not in any rush since they are still so small. Mine did take blood worms though, so i guess it shouldn't be difficult. My plan is to get them big enough to take smelts like i did with my niles. Think ill try some dried krill & tell you how it goes throughout the week. Forgot to mention one of them tried to eat one of my gatf but i was too late to save it, both roughly the same size so don't get fooled by their current size.

Wow,mine is only about an inch in total length.Small yes but my only other source would be the beat up bigger ones in the Chinatown market.

Mine are a little bit bigger, around 3"-4" growing super fast compared to the niles. I got them around your size and is not even a month yet, So dont worry about their size right now  still pissed off he killed one of my gatf though. Can't believe he thought he could swallow something big as him, as i pulled the gatf out of it's mouth i could tell it was physically impossible for it to eat the whole thing.

Pretty good growth in a short period of time.I should be able to put it with my growout dats in no time...Sorry about your Goliath.

Np man, just learn from my mistake  I still got 4 more goliaths.

Barramundi will easily grow to 40cm in their first year if well fed. If you spoil them with live food they are notoriously picky and will literally starve themselves for a week before taking a pellet.

Youre best bet is to slowly wein them onto pellets by introducing them into their diet in a dead feeder fish, slowly decrease the feeders and increase the pellets.

Otherwise you need to just starve them till they take the pellets, they will eventually! Also you need to stick to your guns, one or two feeder fish and the cycle starts all over again haha.

Thanks,I will keep your advice in mind.

I find that at smaller sizes they are much easier to get onto food other than live. Mine are about 2" and are currently eating NLS 1mm pellets, cut up tilapia and live blackworms. They started eating the tilapia a few days after I got them from the LFS. It took me a week to get them to eat the pellets but by that stage they were hitting things that were falling from the top of the tank. The blackworms is a no brainer when it come to fish taking them so I feed the blackworms more as a treat since they mow down blackworms. I've seen about 1/2" growth in a couple weeks at this size.

Sounds good.
