ok so i posted a thread asking about which stocklist i should do (either hondo jags or severums/geos) and i think i have almost decided on the severum/geo route, i wanted to get your guys opinions on how many i could comfortably have however, i got an idea from another member on here who said i could have 4-5 altifrons or surinamensis with 2 severums or 8 red heads with 2 severums but just wanted to get other thoughts on it as well. and see which one of those 3 you guys like the best. so far i think my favorite are the altifrons but the other 2 are quite gorgeous as well. my tank already has a sand bottom i was just worried that my tank size wouldn't permit a decent size school so maybe i should go with the red heads since they stay a bit smaller? snookn has a great deal going on with the surinamensis right now though

as for the severums does anyone know of anyone who has notatus or nice efasciatus variants available, rapps has some rotkeils right now which i love but i would also like to get one of these if possible but nobody i have looked at has them right now

I have an adult pair of Green Severum and a group of Geophagus tapajos orange heads in a 125g. Have had no problems with this combination what so ever. The severums have even breed a couple times with no real issues of aggression. I really like the combination of the slow moving Sevs who have lots of personality and the brightly colored and move active Geos. I have a trio of Laetacara flavilabris and assorted dither fish in there as well. Good luck!

How large is the tank?

I have F1 notatus right now from my wild pair. They are 3". I can also get orangehead Geos around 1 - 2". If you need to stock a tank, let me know.

I would get one of these and a nice rotkiel :) I think the altifrons is the way to go :)

thanks guys for your thoughts, i think ive actually decided to go with a parrot (true hoplarchus parrot not the deformed hybrids) or other larger mild cichlid to stay with my argentea and then get either the red heads or surinamensis (what kind do you guys think is prettier?) im kind of leaning towards the surinamensis since they get the longer trailers and have more actual color in their body as well but i really like the red heads to (and the dealer with the red heads also has small parrots available)

I have a wild True parrot and I have 2 severums growing out. The parrot is awesome looking but not as personal as my severum. if someone said you have to pick one fish to keep I would go with the severum.

But I do think the true parrot is the best looking fish I will even own. with my discus a close second.

why not do the parrot with some Geos?

yeah thats the plan get the parrot and keep it with my argentea and have the geos on the bottom, i do like the severums as well but yeah there is just something really cool about the look of the parrot, i really like the look of those wild morph snooks that ira has but he doesnt have any geos and i want to order all the fish from the same person if possible so i dont have to pay for shipping twice

how fast did your parrot grow by the way? i may be buying a small juvie from rapps and was wondering what kind of growth i could expect from it

Parrots are extremely fast growers. What size tank do you have? Mine dominates my 210g. Mine went from 1" to about 7 or 8" in six months.

the tank is the one in my signature, and thats cool i was hoping that they were fast growers, he should catch up to my argentea in no time then since my arg is growing really slowly, they are more peaceful though right? like i could have it with geos and be alright, im good with a fish that will hold its own if confronted but i dont want one that is going to be a bully looking to start fights all the time

I think it's going to be cramped in a 120 gallon with other large cichlids as it grows. These fish can get 12"+. I wouldn't call them peaceful exactly. Mine has put all of my severums in their place and doesn't tolerate other parrots at all. I've heard that argenteas can be large and aggressive, so I'm thinking you could potentially run into problems there.

Maybe a few other psittacus owners will chime in, but I know Sean's got a bit aggressive and a few others have shared similar stories. You may try the search feature to read more about them.
