So I have decided to get into plecos. I really want to breed them since I have experience breeding other fish. I would like to know adleast the basics on breeding these guys. Please tell me your experiences and tank setups and what species you have bread. Also I do not want to breed the common pleco. I have my eye on starlights and the white spotted L366 adleast.I have room for these plecos, and Got a 55g ready for them along with fry growout tanks. Any help Will be appreciated!:)

Scientific Name(s): Ancistrus sp. l182

Common Name(s): Starlight Bristlenose Pleco, L182

Family: Loricariidae

Species Type: Plecostomus

Maximum Size: 6.5 inches

Life Span: 14 years

Natural Habitat: South American Rivers

Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons

Tank Region: Bottom

Possible Tank Mates: Barbs, Tetras, Firemouth Meekis, Discus

Description: Provide an aquarium of at least 40 gallons for this species. The tank should be furnished with enough rocks, driftwood, and plants to provide adequate hiding places. Driftwood, although not mandatory, is highly recommended as this species is a blackwater fish, and thus requires soft, tannic filled water. Substrate is not important. Although this is a hardy species, it produces a lot of waste and good water quality should always be maintained.

Temperature Range 72°F - 80°F

pH Range 6 - 7.6

Hardness 5° - 15°

Breeding Information: Breeding is difficult, but can be achieved with blackwater water conditions, which are very soft, acidic water created by decaying vegetation. In the wild these water conditions produces very dark yet clear water.

Sexing Information: Males retain a substantially bushier set of rostral cutaneous processes, coinciding with the usual procedure in which to sex the genus. In fishes of similar age, females tend to be smaller, but relative size is by no means a precise way to determine gender.

Diet: Herbivorous - Does well eating algae but also enjoys fresh green vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, romaine lettuce or cucumber slices.

Temperment: Peaceful and timid.

Common Diseases: None specific to species.

And I think the L366 might be banded

Soft, sour water and lots of caves work for most loricarids;)

Posted this in your other thread: Some plecos are easy to breed and some are very diffficult, if not impossible. Ancistrus cats are very easy to breed and easy to move (sell). A good fish for a beginner. Get a pair, feed them lots of vegetable matter (zucchini and canned green beans), provide the male with a long cave with a single entrance, and wait for fry.

Adding peat to the aquarium will lower the pH and soften the water.

The common BN would be the easiest to breed. Get a pair and provide clean water, food and a cave for the male. Driftwood helps and a good water flow also

might think on doing this. I would rather breed something more exotic then just the common.

But u need to experience it from beginners level before u can go to more expensive plecos, just a suggestion. Good luck
