Shrimp mainly, some earthworms, mussels, and cut fresh fish.

Ghost shrimp could indroduce parasites.

My ray is not on live food although it has been suggested by my lfs that he has ghost shrimp every now and again, does anyone know why that it?

Because your LFS wants to sell more ghost shrimp?



Most LFS have a novice experience levels with rays, so sometimes certain recomendations are based on opinions or long-time myth.. Ghost shrimp are great feeders to initiate feeding in a wild or sick ray.. Other than that, they aren't a great staple diet.

I feed them weather loaches (dead and frozen), shrimp and carp fillets!

I feed mine mostly smelts and shrimp.

I've been wondering lately about the smelts though; something I've been told in the past is to never feed freshwater fish other freshwater fish, and don't feed saltwater fish other saltwater fish (when talking about frozen, not live feeders you've quarantined yourself). I believe this is due to possibility of disease from the food fish being transferred to the fish doing the eating. Since it's impossible to tell the health condition of frozen smelts/silversides, I'm what anyone else thinks about this?

Freezing should kill any bugs the smelts or silversides have.
