Calling all scientists: Is this sand safe (MSDS sheet)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The iron oxide in that chemical analysis is present as hematite, a different crystalline form of rust. I agree with tomo, it is /already/ oxidized, making it is less bioavailable (less toxic).

I would not be concerned about it, unlike the situation that most of us may imagine, where something metal is put in the tank, and then goes through the process of rusting -- then you would have a situation where you could potentially have ionized iron free-floating in the water.

You should get the dark version, your tank and fish will photograph better for it.

Thanks for the explanation. Anyone happen to know if this is also safe for shrimp? I'm considering switching the substrate in my 10g with this.

Well I ended up buying 2 50lb bags for my 72g. I only used about 1 1/2 bags though. I'll post pictures when it clears up.

I have this "sand" from TSC in 3 of my tanks, had no issues with fish health from it. The black particles that are mixed in with the white are less dense and I find them some times in my filters. No harm though.

Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the only problem I see. The Fe (iron) will likely oxidize and effect water chemistry, conductivity, and color. May be best to allow the material to leach out in a barrel then use it once it rinses clear and tests as inert on aquarium test kits.
BTW, do you realize that cuts and scrapes on titanium are more painful than glass cuts?
