Calling All you Severum Fans.................

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well if it was the same don't you think it too would be called a green severum lol.

Not always, i have seen sooooo many fish mislabeled, or have multiple names

Pink Con=albino con
dinosaur eel=senegal bichir

so I can easily see green and turqoise as being the same thing

They are the same species. The turquoise are considered a color morph of the greens . They were thought to be a seperate species at one time but thats been disproven . They also don't generally get as large and are much better looking.

Thanks, thats what i thought, just wanted to confirm

Both of my greens that are wild caught and the prettiest im pretty sure are both male. but i do have 2 other greens that are dark pretty much all the time. My Turquoise I think is a male also.

Leah, its boy vs. girl ;)

As for your "green" male, try to find out the catch location. Will help get a better identification on him.

Doesn't look like a normal Sev in my opinion. Having said that however, SA is such a huge place, and there are so many regional variations on H.Efasciatus (and H.Severus it now seems) that a true id will be hard to pin down without catch location.

Greens and turquoise are exactly the same, its most likely the very start of a man made colour morph. heres hoping not though.

Next time i go to that FS ill ask.
Its been a while since they've had them tho.
Whats the best way to tell male from female when it comes to sevs?
I've heard everything from coloration to the maping in their faces.
Also there "tubes" like other fish.
Im sure i can figure it out.
I got this one recently..was told its a female.
Its seemed to pair up with my biggest gold already.

The markings on the face (below their eyes) are probably the best tell - males have a lot of worm-like markings (sometimes red on golds and blue on greens), which are much less pronounced (if any) on females. Your two pictures are actually very good examples.
