Im looking into getting an FX5 but i'll have to order online being no LFS carry it. buying something i cant look at bothers me so i need your help.
-Are you satisfied with its performance? if no, why?
-what are some possible problems with it?
-im using it for mechanical filtration only, are there any filter media you use other than the foam blocks that are meant for it?
-could someone post pictures if the inside so i can see what im getting?

Because of the large flow rate I don't recomend using the FX5 as a mechanical only filter. It WILL work but you'll be cleaning it out every other day. Stick with the factory foam and fill the baskets up with a very low restriction foam or ceramic rings. Anything finer than the factory foam will clog this beast in a heartbeat. This is NOT due to a poor design by the way but rather besause of the massive water flow.

This isn't the best picture in the world but it should give you some idea of the inside of the monster. (I took the picture off of Ebay...lol)

yeh i own one of these baby's its never done me wrong :), there used to be some problems but the newer releases have fixed those im pretty sure. all in all it does what is asked and works fine :)

The only problems that I have had are: the black knobs coming off of their position, the clamps where the hoses will sit can't be removed (too afraid it will break if I try to remove them), and the materials (hose) needed for removing water from the filter when you need to clean it. Other than having to place the knobs back and position the clamps in the right location the first time, it is a good filter.

The hose quick disconnects are actully quite strong and work very well once you get the hang of it. You can pick up an adapter that will allow you to use a regular garden hose on the canister drain and that makes servacing it a lot easier.

Im happy with my FX5 i filled it up with sponges, bio balls, ceramic rings, and more sponges. Seems to work just fine on my 150 thats why i ordered another one.

Bought both of mine online and was 100% happy with them!

i own 2 of them and absolutely love them.. they have a fast flow, so dont bog down that middle with tons of pads,, they gunk up fast and youll notice the flow slow down.. i keep ceramic rings and ONE blue and ONE polishing pad (that is changed weekly) in the middle of the fx5-- only beef is that they are heavier than hell to pull out from underneath to work on--they remind me of a trashcan! lol..

i just measured and the doors on my stand are only 15" wide. IT WONT FIT!! i'll have to settle for whatever is second best!

Try a pair of Fluval 405's. Plenty of water flow and LOT's of mechanical filtration capacity. I run quite a few of them and have NO problems with them. You can pick them up on Ebay for about $120.00 or so...shipped.
