Calling out goldfish keepers!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is definitely about water quality. Stocking guides are just that GUIDES. Water change schedules can completely undo the best and larget setups and can compensate (to a point) for overcrowding (but this should not be an issue).

Why wouldn't you put platies with goldfish?
QUOTE]
Because of the temperature difference. I prefer to keep goldfish at around 75F, I keep all tropical fish in the 80's. Coldwater+Tropical is just not a good match imo.

How would you determine how many gallons x many fish need? It sounds like the same thing, just rewording it.
The same way you would for any other fish, by thinking about their maximum size, amount of waste production, activity level, etc. And it is not the same thing as what you said. Going by your rule, it's a minimum of 10 gallons for one fantail and 20 gallons for 2, but imo, one fantail needs at least 35-55 gallons (depending on the breed) and for each additional goldfish, I would add maybe 5-10 gallons onto that (again, depends on the breed).

^^Oh, and I forgot to mention, for "single tails", I wouldn't go any less than 75 gallons for a single fish, and 90 gallons for 2-3.

Platies are subtropical though, in most homes room temp is ideal for them, not tropical heated tanks. And goldfish are in tropical waters just like most of the tropical fish we keep, they are not the strict coldwater fish that so many make them out to be. In my experience they do very well together and are one of the safest combinations to try with goldfish.

I agree that goldfish need a lot of space. I personally think that since they are schooling there shouldn't be one or two in a tank, but six or more, meaning a 75 minimum for roundbodied goldfish and a 125 minimum for longbodieds. I just think the way you worded it earlier sounded like the same thing, just going in the opposite direction.

Thanks for all the relevent inputs, let's cut down on space/water quality and whatnot,
COMPATIBILITY only pls!!!
my water parameters are ammo 0, trite 0, trate 10, and the water is crystal @ 75F & very well oxygenated with tons of java moss and hornworts so yeah dont worry, just worry about punky bullies for me :D

Currently:
3 ryukin
2 dalmatian mollies
3 black neon tetra
3 neon rosy barb
3 gold barb (aka banana according to LFS lol)
5 bala sharks
5 blue tux platys
5 clown loaches
bullnose & clown pleco

ALL gingerly, eating well, and disease free
PS i'm not trying a yellow perch LOL (too risky)

Anymore suggestions? I want to attempt some docile cichlids, like chocolate and angels and dwarfs and even rainbows just for more awesomeness of a community, i'll keep everyone updated (when i try and get more tankmates) ^^

4 angels
3 more rosy barbs
and 10 more danios are in there, after 72hrs, 100% compatible
let the community list continue! ^^

IMO you need to get rid of most of ur fish i made the same mistake... I got a small feeder gold fish just the common orange color... well he decided to eat close to 200 dollars in fish..... i had full grown odessa barbs full grown black ruby barbs and a few 3" clown loachs.....
3 ryukin
2 dalmatian mollies(get rid of them need salt)
3 black neon tetra(gona be eaten once goldies get some size)(and are schooling fish need 6+)
6 neon rosy barb(Id keep these and just a huge school of 14)
3 gold barb (good choice live in same area of goldfish)
5 bala sharks(likes warmer temps mine like 78-85)
5 blue tux platys(can work but might be eaten soon)
5 clown loaches(will work but In my experince not a good combo)
bullnose & clown pleco(might work but like faster water)
4 angels(need completly diff water and set up)
2 flagtail(will start niping very soon)

this is a time bomb it might be fine now or for a week or 2 but its gona end very badly.....trust the person that has lost many many many fish to gold fish being annoying to be honest if i was gona keep gold fish again it would be in a big pond with 1 huge school of fish....
Its not gona work out in the long run u have fish from many diff places and diff water requirements..... just beacuse the fish have survived after being introduced in an area doesnt mean its a ideal liveing situation..... if i was u id make the stocking closer to

3 ryukin
16 neon rosy barb or 20 gold barb
10 clown loaches(will work but In my experince not a good combo)

this would be a good starting place but id keep asian fish with asian fish only reason i say this is they tend to like the lower temps like gold fish than south amreican or african..... We are already buying them and keeping them in a glass box i think we should try to set up the best thing for the fish.... get a centerpiece fish and build around that.....

ull like the look of the tank much better when the fish arnt 20 diff fish from 20 diff places.... its nice to keep it to a few sp. im not saying dont have a bunch of fish but it looks a lot better when u see a nice large group of fish swiming around and ur golds will swim threw them at it will look cool.
