Calling umbee owners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only time I have had a problem keeping umbees is when a heater fails off. Letting them get cold. My larger pairs thrive and breed at 79-81°F. I would say besides the normal clean water requirements temperature is the next greatest requirement. Saying that I would have two haters in the tank that could carry the great load. Just as a safety factor.

Sounds to me like you've got a good start. With umbees it's best to get at least a group if 4 but the more the better for growing out. They are very conspecific and can be very hard in each other until they form a pair. And on occasion you can have issues with a pair. Have a divider handy for those occasions. But typically after a couple spawns you should be in the clear with your pair. Keep the temps around 79-83 for best success. The warmer the water the faster they grow:) also must keep up on WC's. I feed mine twice a day while growing out and conditioning to spawn otherwise it's only once daily. Maybe also keep the tank decor natural and light. I would add that pebbles would be better until they're grown then add some rock

I'm very new at breeding Umbees, I just got a breeding pair yesterday. I'll keep you updated, but FreshWaterPreDaTors is the one to listen to. He's a seasoned Umbee Breeder!

Umbees aren't really any different than most central/ South American cichlids. They do prefer softer water but will still thrive in a ph of 7.5 or so. Space is key. They need more room than most as they are open water predators. They are far more active than say, dovii. Aggression between pair can get high so be prepared. A 2' tank width will last several years, but most will agree that 3' is minimum for life for most males. My male hit 19" in three years and dans massive male hit 26" in four years. At this age, they have a lot of growth left even though it does slow. Good luck, IMO they are the pinnacle of cichlid fish keeping.
