This could very well be the case...I find it is the most common cause for skittish arowana.

In regards to what Mig shared, how big is your tank? other tankmates?
I found this helped a great deal...My silver is very calm...I also think it makes the tank look better. I now black out all of my tanks regardless of what kind of fish I have.
The reason why LFS aros seem to be so calm is because they are used to the constant movement...in a busy LFS I bet there is hardly a minute that goes by where an arowana isn't bothered by someone passing by.
All of the fish I have raised in high traffic areas around my house seem to be a lot more outgoing compared to the fish I have raised in my bedroom...
That is actually one reason why I decided against an isolated fish room for my tanks.
