Came home today after shopping for filter stuff, freshwater eel, a couple of minnows for the silver we have and low and behold that very pungent rotten egg smell, tested the waters for all tanks and the ammonia levels on the arowana tank are through the roof.

Two hours, 90% w/c and almost $400 later we have now have this:

.

hopefully this will take care of any problems we have. Originally we had two Emperor 400 OTB filters on the 90, but i guess they arent doing so great anymore.

The we started to check the other tanks and found this in my tetra tank.

The irony of housing apple snails in a 40Gal breeder...

Did the power go out for some time ? Sounds like if that happened it could cause that smell you mentioned.. Did you find any reason for the ammonia spike? How old/ established is the tank ?

So you now have 400 dollars worth of uncycled filters.

I was just about to say....hopefully you moved existing media into the new ones. 2 Emp. 400s should have been able to handle a 90, there's something else wrong ...

Actually one of the 405s was on a 75 and was cycled for 6 months. The extra 200 was for filtration, ammo chips chemicals, and new media for the filters. Sorry for the confusion.

The thing we are thinking is that the 2 emperors are getting old and not doing the best of jobs.

Nope, the filters were not filtering food remains that would sink to the bottom...during w/cs we must have missed them as we were sifting through the gravel. And the 90 has been running since we have lived in our current place, for about 6 months now. As for the emperors we would switch media alternating between each filter every 2 months.

ouch that sucks, you must love that aro.

I would have done wc and ordered an fx5
We are waiting on moving and ordering a 300 to get a couple FX5s. And the gf does, I love my FW Lion.

So your trying to tell me you spent 400 bucks on a single fluval 405 plus media:eek::screwy:

It don't matter how many filters you put on that 90g if ya aren't going to so proper tank maintenance the result will be the same. Two emp 400s will easily filter a properly maintained and stocked 90g tank.

I totally gave up on emperors about a year ago.....I have 3 emperor 400s and one 280.....the 280 and one of my 400s are four years old and run perfectly....the other 400s I have run like sh** and I got them like two years ago.....My friend who manages a LFS told me that the emperor filters quality had really gone down the tubes ever since they redesigned them to not have a flow control lever. My old emperor moves a ton of water and the new ones just dont.....I have the old 400 and new 400 sitting side by side on my 55 gallon and I can tell you that the newer 400s are junk
