Came home to a tank full of dead grow outs.

Well, vacation over a weekend (3 days?) not really that brutal. If you do the WC before you leave for vacation then it should be fine WITHOUT your buddy fish babysister...It's must be something wrong on your end, for future just leave your tank alone, i'm pretty sure none of your fish will die without food for few days. I'm not here trying to convince you stay in hobby, if you really want to leave then NO ONE could make you stay so pointless for me to make you feel better over the issue! Get over it and move on or quit if you think that's your life breaking point...

At the time of the original posting I was simply shocked and venting. Seeing as how it's been a month I've had time to get over my loss. I have over 12 systems running so yes, even over a weekend, some things require attention and checked on. I was never pointing fingers at my buddy, just explaining the situation. The problem was my heater (eheim jaeger 150 watt ~3 years old) had either been chomped/ripped on the cord powering it. I didn't notice into I broke everything down and I saw the broken innards exposed. I threw away the heater (very frustrated, still am) otherwise I'd post a pic. Ammonia was (obviously) from dead fish carcasses over time. I usually run a sump and avoid any hardware in the display but this was a quick grow out tank I set up for these guys until I moved and set up the 200 gal for 'em. It sucks a lot and as I stated earlier I get too attached to these guys. I rarely if ever lose fish so it's not something I've built up a buffer to better deal with yet (my oldest fish are pushing 9 years now). I'm only ever this softie when it comes to fish :D Haha

I lost a tank because of a heater malfunction :( melted plastic (i think) everywhere and close to 30 fish dead. At least it wasn't your buddy's fault i suppose, I had a family relationship damaged over a similar situation involving a pot of spilled pellets...

Best of luck with any new stock you choose though! Gonna go with more peacock bass?

Definitely! I have that Cichla fever :D I've got several kelbs and a mono in my main system. I'm just hoping to get some Orinos, intermedia, azuls, and Xingu in with them. Hopefully one day it'll be realized.
