quick correction which I made right as you were replying. I meant they are often mixed with cyclostoma.. not multifasciata. lol I just billed someone for a mult and had it in my head as I was typing.
76-78 is fine. they are a fast flowing riverine species so the water temp is cooler than what most think. keep in mind the air is warm but the water is often fast and cool. pipes would be highly recommended. Post a photo of it and we can get a better ID.

Thx for the pics I’ll take a pic when I get home last question is what would be the recommended tank size he is currently In a grow out tank I’ve seen online a range for pike cichlids from 40 breeder for smaller to 200, since he is smaller and 8 inch is maxed would a 40 breeder be sufficient?
This species is considered rheophillic, often found in rapids, and riffles, and below the dam where there is heavy counter current,
I would run a powerhead throwing a current along the entire length of the tank, so water is highly oxygenated.
Putting a venturi tube on the flow entering the tank would also provide the conditions found where they live in nature.

I gave him In a 30 breeder currently I’ll keep him in there for a bit, and quarantine and once I get from school upgrade to the 75 he sort of fell in my lap lol
For what is worth (and if anybody cares), here is a photo of the lectotype (single, name bearer specimen) of Crenicichla cametana Steindachner 1911, from the National Museum in Vienna (lower figure). The original description was based on 3 specimens (same locality), one of them, slightly smaller, is also in Vienna, the other has not been found. Not very useful for coloration, as can be expected for an ethanol-preserved specimen collected over a 100 years ago, but otherwise quite useful.
A key to the 10 species of Crenicichla from the Tocantins River known at the time (1986) is below, but additional species have been described since, as well as additional information about them (including molecular data) acquired. From that, C. cyclostoma is indeed one of the closest (strictly based on morphology) mainly differing from C. cyclostoma in having a slightly shorter upper jaw than cametana.
