Hi there guys and gals! Im planning on buying a new camera this week and have been looking into the Nikon D40. I was woundering if anyone has this camera if they could give me the heads up on it aswell as post some pics so i can actually see the quality of the photos. Its on sale right now so ill be getting the camera for 419.00. If anyone has other suggestions im open to that just im on a budget,i dont want to go over 500 dollars. Im tired of youre regular digital cameras. Im into taking pictures of nature,my fish and my daughter. And i want really good quality so my pictures look real. Thanx guy and gals for youre help.

I have a d90 and love it. My sister has a d40 and it takes really awesome photos too. I was pretty sure they stopped making the d40 maybe it was the d50 I dunno. Very good cameras and that is a good price. I payed 1000 for just the camera body of my D90. sorry no good sample pics.

Actually I have a few crappy ones that I took here. The camera takes better pictures than these. I had it on point and shoot in a dark house with full fill flash.

Thanx so much for the advice, i did look into the d50 cause i noticed alot of people on here had it but i noticed it was dicontinued, So i went because of the price the d40 instead. Im going from a simple Sony cyber shot to this camera i think , so i hoping it is preety simple to use in order to get great pics.

from what ive been reading a d60 or 80 would be a better camera to get.... more features than a d40 and more advanced... im inbetween a cannon(forget the model) and a d90 but may get a d80 for my first one...

Hey there, thanx for the advice, i was looking up those two aswell but for the money i want to spend its just a little too much just especially for a SLR beginner.

The D40 will be fine for everything you mentioned. The only thing I suggest is to get an external flash, Or you'll be getting flash spots on your glass/ acrylic. the Sb- 600 or 800 are great and will help you later with family, portrait photography as you can bounce the light around. I have an sb-600 on my D80 and love it. you can find the Nikon D-1x era speedlights (which are great) on Craigslist for about 100.00. I saw the sb-28 today for 130.00 I believe.

I think MFK member Bogwoodbruce just got a D40 a couple of months ago and he's got good shots in his threads. Also looking up d40 on Flickr.com will give you images taken by D40's. Some are absolutely amazing.

I use a d40 along with a 50mm lens to take really close-up shots with a nice blur on the background (bokeh). It's the cheapest setup u'd get, albeit u'd need to manually focus. Takes a while to get the hang of it, otherwise buy a sigma HSM 1.4 for approx 500USD which coincidentally auto-focuses nicely on the D40. Don't use flash as it'd give your fishes fits! :P lol... i think :) Anyone has any related information to flash vs. fish syndrome? Any side-effects? I know most aquaria wouldn't let u "flash" their fishes!
