The D40 will be fine for everything you mentioned. The only thing I suggest is to get an external flash, Or you'll be getting flash spots on your glass/ acrylic. the Sb- 600 or 800 are great and will help you later with family, portrait photography as you can bounce the light around. I have an sb-600 on my D80 and love it. you can find the Nikon D-1x era speedlights (which are great) on Craigslist for about 100.00. I saw the sb-28 today for 130.00 I believe.

Thanx for the great tips! Ive been reading alot on it and it seems to be for what i need it would be the camera for me ,thanx again!

I think MFK member Bogwoodbruce just got a D40 a couple of months ago and he's got good shots in his threads. Also looking up d40 on Flickr.com will give you images taken by D40's. Some are absolutely amazing.

Thanx so much for the name i seen some great pics, makes me want it even more!

I use a d40 along with a 50mm lens to take really close-up shots with a nice blur on the background (bokeh). It's the cheapest setup u'd get, albeit u'd need to manually focus. Takes a while to get the hang of it, otherwise buy a sigma HSM 1.4 for approx 500USD which coincidentally auto-focuses nicely on the D40. Don't use flash as it'd give your fishes fits! :P lol... i think :) Anyone has any related information to flash vs. fish syndrome? Any side-effects? I know most aquaria wouldn't let u "flash" their fishes!

HAHAHA ya i wouldnt want to hurt any of my fish!

Canon D40 is a very good camera. Unless you photograph for a living, it's more camera than most of us will ever need. Ever.

Ya im no professional and if i ever do become one, one day then ill just upgrade, i think this camera will be perfect for the beginner SLR

My fish never even notice... at all. most succesful, detailed fish photography is done with flash. Look at Aquamojo's threads.

In fact, if you don't know how to use a DSLR, I can give you a $5,000 Canon 1 D Mark II and you wouldn't even know how to turn it on. The D40 is a camera that'll take astonishing photos, but do you have the skills?

He's actually talking about the nikon d40 not the canon 40d or d40 which is a noticeable difference of a grand. The Nikon version is perhaps the most user friendly DSLR there is. As he also stated he is not too new to photography. My D80 has yielded awesome photos (to me), when I try, however my scratched up tanks usually pose a significant barrier. I have no doubt with effort the author of this thread can do the same.
