camping trip to Snake Road!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was there around 1pm on April 26th. I left the road a couple times to check out the bluffs, but couldn't find a single herp. It was a great day, sun was out, but plenty of shade amongst the trees. I'm sure i was within feet of many snakes, just didn't see them.

Yeah, thats how it goes sometimes. Just like fishing; you can be out all day and never get so much as a bite.

I went camping this past weekend neat the delta in Mobile Bay; I mean, prime habitat for a slew of Southeast herps.....didn't see a darn thing except for one tiny little ground skink. But there was a t-storm impending and the sky was really overcast, so I think that kept a lot of critters in hiding.

However, when I got back home Sunday, I went out black-berry picking with the girlfriend and my siblings. Found this big boy under a piece of plywood. One of the biggest black racers Ive ever seen.

I do go camping a lot, so hope to find more later this year. Every time I go camping/fishing with a friend (who has snake phobia) a common northern water snake pops up right next to him. I always know it's time to put the pole down and watch a snake when I see my buddy running like the wind. That's at Mark Twain Lake.

I have always wanted to see a copperhead in the wild, but also a little hesitant as well. My one daughter just turned 4 and loves snakes. I'm afraid that she would grab w/out thinking. She and I have an albino nelsons milksnake and AKSB sand boa. She also has the largest wolf spider I ever saw as well in a 2 1/2 gallon tank. I need to bring the camera with me more often. Need to add some pics to this site.

Later
