As for being endangered I believe they are extinct in the wild and so it is very important to keep Maddy species in tanks where they can not hybridize.

I am looking at adding some of these in the near future.
 
while we should protect the species we have in the hobby it is listed as Vulnerable not extinct and from what I hear getting the eggs to hatch is not an easy task so producing hybrids is pretty low on the list of fears. Dstuer has gotten eggs on multiple occasions but no fry that I am aware of. I think ciclasoman (Jose) has breed them. He has breed most Maddys so if you are looking for breeding info those would be 2 great sources.

Oh and Rare Dave has some in stock now I believe.

Does anyone know how to tell male from female with these guys?

Yes i'm getting his last 5. I know old world had (maybe still has) some.

If you wanna talk about malagasy fish, aside from Jose (ciclasoman), you should check out Madfish group on yahoo.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/madfish/ You'll get all the answers and discussions you need from other crazy Mad cichlid keepers as well as a few big guys on Malagasy cichlids like Patrick DeRham.
